Strengthening regional experiences on sustainable peatland management (ASEAN-REPEAT)

ASEAN REPEAT is evaluating approaches in pilot areas in Indonesia and Malaysia and building on these results to develop specific financing schemes, business models and fiscal policy recommendations. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is being utilised to scale up the insights gained to the regional level.

Policy Priorities :

– Updated ASEAN Peatland Management Strategy (APMS) 2023-2030
– National Action Plan on Peatlands (NAPPs)
– Peat Ecosystem Protection and Management Plan / Rencana Perlindungan dan Pengelolaan Ekosistem Gambut (RPPEG) Provinsi Aceh and 2 districts (Aceh barat and nagan raya)
– Indonesia National Determined Contribution to reducing GHG to 31.89 percent unconditionally and 43.20 percent conditionally, especially to 60% expected reduction contribution via the Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU) Net Carbon Sink by 2030.

Policy Targets :

– ASEAN Member States advance towards implementing their NAPPs (for countries that already have NAPPs) via measures on the ground related to peatland inventory and mapping, fire monitoring and management, reducing GHG emissions, improving biodiversity in peatland ecosystems and supporting peatland friendly livelihoods to peatland communities.
– All ASEAN Member States have an updated NAPPs
– Establishment of RPPEG Aceh Province and 2 districts (Aceh Barat and Nagan raya)
– Contribute to Indonesia NDC through peatland restoration

Policy Program/Initiative :
 
– Various capacity development to support ASEAN Member States to achieve their NAPPs on the ground (for countries that already have NAPPs) and to develop NAPPs (for country that do not yet have NAPPs)
– The development of ASEAN Peatland Management Strategy 2023-2030 as a groundwork for NAPPs
– Baseline studies for pilot site intervention areas in Indonesia (Aceh) and Malaysia (Pahang)
– Technical and consultancy support to establish RPPEG Aceh and 2 districts (Aceh Barat and Nagan Raya) in Aceh Province
– Support the implementation of Indonesia government approach to peatland restoration: Self-Organized Peat Care Villages (Desa Mandiri Peduli Gambut – DMPG) programme in 10 villages in Aceh and 3 PHU
– L40Canal blocking construction and establishment 10 water logger in Aceh pilot site area of intervention to support water management in the peatland and reduce GHG emissions
