Reducing deforestation by strengthening forest communities in Kerinci

The Land Use Management to Reduce Deforestation (LUMeR) project supports village government and regional government in producing policies that regulate the management of forest communities and farmers’ activities, also developing coffee and cinnamon diversification businesses through Village-Owned Enterprises. This project also can be connected to IKI project implementers in Indonesia.

Policy Priorities :

National Determination Contribution (NDC) as a policy priority supported by this project. In addition, this project supports the implementation of regulations regarding Village Local Authority, where the Village Government has the authority to regulate land use and village boundaries.

Policy Targets :

The contribution that has been demonstrated through this project is the implementation of Sustainable Agroforestry Practices (SAP) in 3 villages as models of the project, namely Tamiai Village, Pematang Lingkung Village, and Pungut Hilir Village. The positive impact on plantations and commodity products encourages the Village Government through its authority to regulate the sustainable management of land and plantations in the village.

Policy Program/Initiative :

51 farmers voluntarily use their land (a total of 68 ha) as a demonstration plot to implement Sustainable Agroforestry Practices (SAP) in their gardens for cinnamon, coffee, vegetables, and fruits. Farmers who apply the SAP method are less affected by the long drought that occurred in 2023. They can still harvest vegetables and fruit for daily needs or sell them at the market. Based on the good practices of farmers, the Village Government is increasingly confident in formulating land management policies in the village, including the implementation of SAP for community gardens that border forest areas. This project also encourages the activity of Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes) in the village economy, because some of the harvest from the demonstration plot areas can be produced into semi-finished products or cooked products, and sold through BUMDes.
