Conservation seagrass ecosystems – safeguarding food security and resilience in vulnerable coastal communities

The project addresses global seagrass decline and lack of information status by training local NGOs and communities in participatory science to gather data and identify key areas for conservation. It engages government and other stakeholders in developing policies and implements sustainable business models to support seagrass conservation efforts.

Policy Priorities :

Contribute scientifically to support Indonesia’s second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), with a focus on the attempt to incorporate seagrass blue carbon into new targets for adaptation and mitigation. The Ministry of Marine and Fishery Affairs’ (MMFA) Directorate General PKRL is in charge of coordinating the inclusion of seagrass blue carbon into the NDC.
Assist the Directorate General PKRL, MMFA, in coordinating, developing the National Action Plan for Dugong Conservation (RAN Dugong).
Assist the North Sulawesi government in the revision and enhancement of the North Sulawesi Marine Spatial Planning.

Policy Targets :

2nd NDC: By supplying Seagrass Ecosystem Services data and findings in North Sulawesi, the SES project helps to increase the precision of seagrass carbon stock estimation at the ecosystem level. These data contributions include carbon measurement results, seagrass carbon core sample analysis, and visual spot-checks to clarify the ecosystem’s diversity and distribution.
RAN Dugong: improving dugong distribution analysis, contributing to the development of a more robust management roadmap and seagrass habitat management plan.
North Sulawesi Marine Spatial Planning: inclusion of seagrass ecosystems into traditional fishing zones (Ind: Zona Perikanan Tradisional) and new allocation of conservation area based on seagrass and dugong conservation in Sangihe Islands, North Sulawesi.

Policy Program/Initiative :

Programs and Initiatives: What programs, initiatives, or activities are being implemented to achieve these targets?
Seagrass and dugong data co-production (North Sulawesi), including seagrass diversity & distribution, dugong sightings and population estimation and seagrass carbon.
Implementation of data FGDs, participating and hosts series of seagrass blue carbon workshops.
Production of Scientific Paper (currently in draft manuscript) and Policy Brief.
Joining Government Task Force for Seagrass Blue Carbon, RAN Dugong at national level and North Sulawesi Spatial Planning Task Force.
Pilot projects to establish resilient coastal communities by diversification of livelihood (i.e. ecotourism, spirulina blue foods)
